Pelini Eyecare accepts most major vision and medical insurance plans as well as a number of vision discount plans. Flexible spending and HSA accounts may also be used to pay for services and products. Because vision coverage can be so confusing, we’ve provided a handy guide to answer the most commonly asked questions.

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance is used for visits when we perform your comprehensive annual eye examination, contact lens examination, and for when you purchase eyeglasses and/ or contact lenses. Plans may have a fixed schedule of copays for services and materials, a fixed dollar amount to contribute (called an allowance), or they may provide a flat discount. Many plans also offer additional benefits for prescription sunwear and laser vision correction. Most plans will cover eyeglasses OR contact lenses, but some employers offer secondary coverage so you can receive full benefits when you purchase both. Plan benefits can either renew on the first of the year, or an insurance-specified time from the last service date.

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance is used for visits related to eye injuries, infections, and irritations. Make sure to bring your medical insurance card with you to these types of appointments. Most medical insurance plans consider optometrists to be specialists, so you should expect to pay the Specialist CoPay at the time of your visit.

Vision Discount Programs/ Office Discounts

You may have a medical insurance plan or a savings group membership that offers a vision discount program to subscribers. Savings with these programs are modest but worth looking into. We suggest that you call your medical insurance Member Services department and ask if they offer any discounts on routine vision services and materials. If you do qualify for a vision discount program, please inform us of the program when scheduling your appointment. We honor most nationally-recognized discount programs.

Our office also offers certain discounts to qualifying patients and purchases. We’ll be sure to calculate in these discounts when totaling your order.

Flexible Spending/ Health Savings Accounts

Eye exams and prescription eyewear/ contact lenses qualify for Flexible Spending and Health Savings Account dollars. These accounts can be combined with other vision coverage, so make sure to let your optician know that you are using your flex spend or HSA money and we’ll provide a detailed receipt for submission. If you have extra money left at the end of the year, why not use it for a great pair of prescription sunglasses?

Self-Pay Patients

We welcome all patients regardless of vision coverage, and thus try to keep our fees affordable for everyone. Ask your optician about the best way to save money as a Self-Pay Patient.
